Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has played down the importance of the Carabao Cup following his side’s fourth-round exit, insisting that the Premier League remains the club’s main priority this season.
The Blues were knocked out by Liverpool on Wednesday night after losing 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea from the penalty spot before Liverpool equalised with a spot-kick of their own. Neither side could find a winner during regulation time, forcing the contest into a penalty shoot-out, where Liverpool held their nerve to secure qualification for the quarter-finals.
Reacting to the defeat, Alonso described the competition as the least important of Chelsea’s campaigns this season, suggesting that his attention is firmly on the league.
“This is the least important competition for us,” the Spaniard said.
“The Premier League is the main focus,” he added.
Chelsea’s early elimination means they will no longer have the opportunity to compete for the Carabao Cup this season, putting greater emphasis on their remaining competitions.
The League Cup is often viewed as a route to early silverware, but clubs competing across multiple fronts must balance their ambitions with the demands of a busy fixture schedule. Alonso’s comments indicate that Chelsea’s priority is to make progress in the Premier League rather than dwell on their cup disappointment.
