A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, identified as Kamoru Omokoye, has been shot dead by suspected cultists at Abijo Bus Stop in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

Omokoye was reportedly attacked and shot in the head around 9am on Sunday by two men who arrived at the bus stop in an unregistered Lexus RX 350.

A police source in the community, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said the suspects fled the scene immediately after the attack.

The source said, “The incident occurred around 9am on Sunday. Two men suspected to be cultists arrived at Abijo Bus Stop in an unregistered Lexus RX 350 and shot the deceased victim, who was a member of the NURTW. The attackers immediately sped off from the scene.

“The deceased was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Epe, Lagos State, for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty at the medical facility.”

The source added that detectives visited the scene after receiving information about the incident and combed the area for possible arrests.

Meanwhile, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, said Omokoye, also known as Zobo, was at a drinking spot where local gin, popularly called ogogoro, was being sold when the attackers opened fire.

The platform said at least three other people sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.

According to the platform, Omokoye had previously worked at Awoyaya Bus Stop before moving to GRA Bus Stop and was the father of an eight-month-old child.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, saying the police had commenced investigation.

The latest killing comes amid concerns over violent attacks in the Ibeju-Lekki community.

A mechanic identified simply as Samson was reportedly killed in September after he was allegedly lured to the area under the pretext of repairing a Mercedes-Benz. He was reportedly taken into a bush and hacked to death.
