A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced Olayemi Ayomide to 10 years in prison for robbing a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Adekanmbi Olubusayo, and an artisan, Hunwanu Adebayo, of their belongings.
The sentence was handed down on Monday by Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay after Ayomide entered a plea bargain. When the amended charges were read, Ayomide pleaded guilty, and the judge issued the 10-year sentence in accordance with the agreed-upon terms for the two counts of attempted theft.
In her ruling, Justice Nicol-Clay affirmed that Ayomide entered the plea deal voluntarily and understood the consequences of his guilty plea. She stated, “The court finds the agreed punishment of 10 years appropriate, considering the convict’s admission of guilt and remorse.”
Ayomide was convicted for attempting to commit felony and stealing, with his sentence set to start from his remand date of January 3, 2019.
The prosecution, led by Mrs. Titilayo Olanrewaju-Daud, explained that Ayomide robbed the victims on December 31, 2018, around 12 p.m. near Surulere/Ojuelegba in Lagos. Items stolen included four ATM cards, an NYSC ID card, a driver’s license, a Samsung C5 mobile phone, and N2,050 in cash.
Ayomide was initially charged on November 14, 2019, and pleaded not guilty to the three original charges against him.
