The management of Smiley Kids Montessori School, located in the Sangotedo area of Lagos, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of two-year-old Raphaella Ogbodo, who tragically passed away in the school’s pool on January 15, 2025.
The school confirmed it is fully cooperating with the police in the ongoing investigation into the incident.
There has been some controversy surrounding the cause of the child’s death, with Raphaella’s parents alleging that she was electrocuted and later thrown into the pool to cover up the incident.
In a statement released yesterday, the school expressed its condolences, calling the incident devastating.
The statement reads: “It is with profound sadness that Smiley Kids Montessori School announces the tragic passing of two-year-old Raphaella Ogbodo, a pre-school pupil, who lost her life after an incident at our swimming pool. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Ogbodo family, and we deeply empathize with their grief. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and relevant authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
“As a result of this incident, our school is currently closed while investigations are underway. We understand the concerns this tragedy has raised among parents and the public, and we are committed to providing updates as new information becomes available.
“We respectfully ask for patience and privacy for the grieving family during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Ogbodo family.”
