President Bola Tinubu stated yesterday that his decision to remove the fuel subsidy was aimed at safeguarding the future of unborn generations.
The President made this declaration during the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to youth empowerment, stressing that government policies are tailored to ensure a prosperous future for all Nigerians.
Tinubu stated, “I’ve listened to you carefully; today is not for long speeches. I just want to reassure you that you are the hope of the country. Everything hinges on your future. Every decision I’ve made is focused on tomorrow.”
He continued, “When you remove the oil subsidy, you’re protecting the future of generations yet unborn — the youth. What about the investments in infrastructure? The reason many professionals talk about leaving Nigeria is because they don’t see the prosperity that can keep them here. If we build prosperity at home and empower people, they will stay. This is your home to develop, build, and prosper.”
The President also emphasized the importance of youth in nation-building, saying, “The government of the day is for you. Take it seriously. You can criticize politicians as much as you want, but politics is about development and the future of the next generation. I’m happy to see you all here as a committee, ready to inspire today, tomorrow, and the days to come. I am with you.”
He reflected on the challenges his administration faced at the beginning, saying, “When we started, everything seemed uncertain and bleak. We struggled, like drawing water from a dry well. But today, the economy has taken a turn for the better: prices are falling, investor confidence is rising, and technology is advancing. You now have the opportunity to make a difference.”
Tinubu urged the committee members to take full advantage of their roles in shaping Nigeria’s future: “I’ve heard the comments from your spokesperson. You hold the key to advancing this country. My role is to clear the path, remove the obstacles, and help make your future brighter. But ultimately, it is in your hands.”
He added, “Look me in the eyes, tell me what you think is wrong and how we can fix it. We will try to implement suggestions that will contribute to the prosperity of Nigeria.”
The President further reiterated his commitment to improving the nation for the younger generation, noting that the youth represent over 60% of Nigeria’s population and are the heartbeat of the nation.
“I am with you, and I wish you a successful tenure. Let’s use technology as much as possible. Let’s focus on improving agriculture, empowering youth, and working towards food sovereignty.”
In a lighthearted moment, he shared, “I admire your youth; I can’t be young again, maybe in the next life. But for now, I envy all of you.”
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, also spoke, stating that the upcoming youth conference would promote active youth engagement.
He praised President Tinubu’s administration for being responsive to the ideas and contributions of young people. He highlighted that the committee members were carefully chosen, including representatives from various government ministries, civil society organizations, NGOs, and international organizations like the World Bank, to drive the success of the youth conference.
Samson Itodo, a leading member of the planning committee and Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, commended President Tinubu for acknowledging the importance of youth in shaping the country’s future.
