The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has expressed support for Ushie Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member based in Lagos, who recently claimed to have received threats for criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
TUC President Festus Osifo, speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, stated that the NYSC member’s criticism was driven by frustration and advised the government to not target her but instead show tolerance towards critics.
Osifo emphasized that the government should understand the frustrations of citizens, particularly in times of hardship, and not take personal offense when individuals voice their frustrations.
He further remarked, “People are hungry, people are tired, so if they decide to vent, the government should not personalize it.”
He added, “A young lady serving her NYSC, what does she have to do to bring down the government? It’s simply personal frustration being aired.”
However, Osifo also advised critics to express their concerns with decorum and in a manner that is constructive.
Uguamaye, also known as Raye, recently garnered attention after posting a video on TikTok, where she expressed dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s economic conditions.
She called President Tinubu a “terrible leader” and questioned the government’s efforts to alleviate citizens’ struggles. Raye also claimed that she faced threats from NYSC officials urging her to remove the video.
At the time of publication, the NYSC had not issued an official statement on the matter.
