The Rivers State Government has expressed shock and disappointment over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara, while leaving Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in office despite his involvement in the state’s political crisis.

In a statement released by Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, the government labeled the decision as unjust.

It highlighted Governor Fubara’s commitment to upholding constitutional order, maintaining peace, and ensuring good governance despite the ongoing political challenges in the state.

Johnson emphasized that since taking office, Governor Fubara has focused on protecting lives and property, as well as fostering progress in Rivers State. Even amidst political instability, the governor has remained dedicated to his constitutional duties, prioritizing the welfare of the people over personal or political interests.

Following President Tinubu’s intervention aimed at fostering peace, the Rivers State Government acted in good faith by implementing the agreed terms, which included the reinstatement of commissioners who had previously resigned.

Additionally, the government complied with the Supreme Court’s ruling once the certified true copy of the judgment was received, demonstrating its adherence to legal and democratic processes.

Despite these efforts, Johnson expressed concern that lawmakers loyal to Wike, the former governor of the state, have continued to hinder the peace process and stability. He voiced his surprise that while Fubara has been removed, Wike, whom he described as the central figure in the crisis, remains in office.

“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor,” Johnson remarked.

In reassurance to Rivers residents, the commissioner stressed that governance continues effectively despite the political challenges. Salaries have been paid, development projects are ongoing, and the state remains secure.

At this crucial time, the government urged Rivers citizens to stay peaceful and law-abiding while reaffirming its commitment to working with all relevant institutions to uphold democracy and ensure the continued prosperity of the state.

“We have always been a resilient people, and we will confront this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Johnson concluded.

The Rivers State Government reaffirmed its dedication to the well-being and prosperity of its people while navigating the unfolding political developments.
