Aisha Achimugu, a prominent Nigerian businesswoman and socialite, has reportedly embarked on a hunger strike while being held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following her arrest by the agency.
Her lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that Achimugu was apprehended at about 5 a.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The EFCC had declared Achimugu wanted in March 2025 over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. On Monday, Justice I.E. Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered her to present herself at the EFCC office the following day and appear in court on Wednesday.
Ojukwu explained that Achimugu had returned voluntarily from London to comply with the court’s directive and had notified the court of her intentions. However, she was arrested upon her arrival in Nigeria.
“Following her commitment to the court, our client returned voluntarily but was taken into custody. She has now commenced a hunger strike. This is a clear violation of the rule of law she is a prisoner of conscience,” Ojukwu said.
Efforts to obtain a comment from EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale were unsuccessful.
Achimugu is the Group Managing Director and CEO of Felak Concept Group, a diversified company with interests spanning engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology.
