After his film Lisabi garnered major wins at the recent Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) including Best Indigenous Language Movie actor and producer Lateef Adedimeji has opened up about the recognition and what lies ahead.
In a conversation with Sunday Scoop on the AMVCA red carpet, Adedimeji shared that while he’s proud of the film’s success, he doesn’t feel the need to outdo himself.
“There’s no pressure to top Lisabi, but I’m motivated to keep going,” he said. “We’re already in the early stages of something new.”
Adedimeji emphasized the value of platforms like the AMVCA in inspiring Nollywood creatives.
“We need this kind of encouragement,” he said. “The AMVCA is like our Oscars. Being recognized here means your work is making an impact.”
However, he acknowledged that awards aren’t the only measure of quality.
“Not being recognized doesn’t mean your work isn’t good,” he noted. “But recognition can affirm that you’re headed in the right direction. Keep pushing your moment will come.”
He also applauded the increasing embrace of stories told in indigenous African languages.
“When we tell our stories authentically and with passion, the recognition will follow,” he concluded.
