Crime and Metro Correctional Officer survives suicide attempt at Gusau Dam Modupeola Showunmi June 13, 2025 A Chief Correctional Assistant (CCA) with the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abdullahi Nura, reportedly attempted suicide by jumping into Gusau Dam in Zamfara State on Wednesday morning. According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Zamfara Command, ASC I Mustapha Abubakar, the incident occurred shortly after Nura reported for duty. He was said to have hired a commercial motorcyclist to take him to Gusau Dam—the largest and deepest water body in the metropolis—where he suddenly leapt into the water. “The rider immediately alerted dam staff and security operatives, who quickly intervened and rescued the officer from drowning,” Abubakar stated. Nura was found dressed in his official uniform and had his service ID on him at the time of the incident. The Nigerian Correctional Service headquarters in Zamfara was promptly notified. In response, the State Controller of Corrections, CCS Musa Tanko, dispatched a rescue team that evacuated Nura to the Medical Clinic at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Gusau. The statement confirmed that Nura has regained consciousness and is currently receiving treatment, with encouraging signs of recovery. The reason behind the attempted suicide remains unclear.
