Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday led members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to a crucial meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The meeting, held at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja, was aimed at addressing internal party issues requiring the Commission’s regulatory guidance. Present at the meeting were People’s Democratic party Governors Forum chairman Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), deputy chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).

Speaking before the meeting went behind closed doors, the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, said the party sought INEC’s clarification on matters arising from its recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

“We are here to engage with you sincerely. Following our NEC meeting, certain decisions were taken, and we received your response advising us to remain guided by the rules. We want to avoid any form of controversy,” Damagum explained.

Responding, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, acknowledged the PDP’s correspondence and stressed the Commission’s commitment to impartiality in dealing with all political parties.

“We have received conflicting communications from your party naming Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, and Setonji Koshoedo for the same position. This lack of clarity is concerning,” Yakubu stated.

He reaffirmed INEC’s dedication to its constitutional role, emphasizing that “our responsibility is to ensure compliance with the electoral laws and guidelines.”
