Renowned socio-political activist Aisha Yesufu has urged the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition to prioritize genuine inclusion of young people and women in leadership and decision-making roles.
Taking to her X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Yesufu an outspoken supporter of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi criticized the overwhelmingly male leadership lineup revealed at the coalition’s official launch.
“Dear Coalition (ADC), women leader and youth leader positions cannot be the only roles reserved for women and youths,” she wrote.
“A decision-making table filled solely with older men is not representative. Women and youths must be present not as afterthoughts, but as integral players.”
She called on Nigerian youths and women to actively engage in politics and seize leadership opportunities.
“Now is the time to bring in fresh energy and ideas. Be loud. Be part of the leadership. Join as delegates, floor members get involved and lead! Overwhelm for good,” Yesufu added.
Her remarks followed the official unveiling of the ADC as a unifying platform for opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections, aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The launch event was held Wednesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
Former Senate President David Mark was introduced as the interim National Chairman, while ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was named interim National Secretary.
According to ADC founding National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, current party executives stepped aside voluntarily to pave the way for a new leadership framework.
