The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and banned him from all party-related activities for 30 years.

The decision was announced by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, in a statement issued in Abuja. The SDP accused El-Rufai of falsely claiming party membership, forging documents, and engaging in acts that undermined the party’s constitution and unity.

“El-Rufai never registered at his ward level as required by our constitution,” the statement read. “Yet he falsely declared on social media that he had joined the SDP, even going as far as forging documents and posing with suspended party leaders to support his claims.”

The party said it initially gave El-Rufai the benefit of the doubt due to his past political roles but found, after investigation, that he had never legally joined the SDP. Instead, he was allegedly working to destabilise the party while publicly aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and promoting coalition talks without authorization.

“He published false claims of membership, forged his own membership documents, and arrogated to himself the title ‘number 001’ of the Unguwar Sarki Ward register in Kaduna, despite not being recognized by the ward leadership,” SDP added.

The statement also noted that El-Rufai had a history of hostility toward the SDP during his tenure as Kaduna governor under the APC.

As a result, the party declared El-Rufai banned from applying for membership, using the SDP name, logo, or insignia and participating in any party affairs for the next 30 years.

The SDP also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant bodies to disregard any claims El-Rufai makes on behalf of the party.

The former governor recently announced his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a conflict between his values and the party’s current direction.
