The National Assembly is considering amending the Electoral Act to allow all elections in 2027 to be conducted on a single day.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, disclosed this during a meeting with a delegation from the European Union’s Election Observation Follow-up Mission to Nigeria’s 2023 general election, led by Barry Andrews, in Abuja on Thursday.

If approved and signed into law, the amendment would mean presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and state House of Assembly elections would all take place on the same day.

Abbas explained that many lawmakers believe a single-day election would cut costs by up to 40 percent while improving efficiency, transparency, and voter turnout. He noted that a recent joint meeting of Senate and House leadership resolved to fast-track consideration of electoral amendment proposals.

The Speaker also assured the EU team that recommendations from international observers on the 2023 general elections are being factored into ongoing reforms. He added that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to improving Nigeria’s electoral process.

Meanwhile, the delegation also visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where Chairman Mahmood Yakubu warned that delays in amending the Electoral Act could affect preparations for 2027.

The EU delegation, which has been in Nigeria for three weeks, also met with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as part of its assessment of reforms since the last general elections.
