The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to demonstrate his professed commitment to justice and the rule of law by handing over the Amotekun Corps Commander, Adekunle Omoyele to the police.
The party, in a statement issued on Saturday, accused the governor of shielding Omoyele.
This is as the government described the allegations as false and a a display of loss of direction by the opposition party.
The APC in the statement signed by Kola Olabisi, the party spokesperson claimed that reports making the rounds in Osogbo suggest that Omoyele has been “shielded” within the Government House to evade arrest, describing the alleged protection of a suspect as “irresponsible, wicked, and unpatriotic.”
“It is disappointing that the governor is being linked to allegations of aiding and abetting crimes, just as was the case with his former Chief Security Officer,” the APC said.
The opposition party insisted that Governor Adeleke, as a “self-acclaimed believer in due process,” must hand over Omoyele to law enforcement agencies to allow for a thorough investigation into what it described as a “national embarrassment.”
According to the APC, “If the commander of a state security outfit has nothing to hide, there should be no reason to evade police interrogation. The governor must act immediately to redeem his image and that of his administration.”
The party further warned that turning the Government House into “a refuge for suspected criminals” would set a dangerous precedent for justice and governance in the state.
In his reaction, Adeleke’s spokesman, Olawale Rasheed explained that Adeleke is committed to rule of law and is assisting police in the investigation.
“The Akinlalu incident is a matter of law and order, and the Inspector General of Police has already taken charge of the investigation,” Rasheed said in a statement. “Our government will not intervene or obstruct the process.”
He cautioned against politicising the tragedy, urging residents to allow due process to take its course without distractions.
“The opposition’s allegations are unfounded and baseless,” the statement continued. “The Osun APC, lacking direction and strategy, has resorted to spreading misinformation. We will not succumb to blackmail or be distracted by a party more interested in destabilising the state than in promoting good governance.”
