Former Burnley boss Sean Dyche has reached a verbal agreement to take over as Nottingham Forest’s new manager, following the sudden sacking of Ange Postecoglou.

Negotiations reportedly continued late into Sunday night, with both sides eager to finalise a deal quickly. The club hopes Dyche can have a few days to prepare the team ahead of their Europa League clash with Porto on Thursday.

While the paperwork has not yet been signed, Sky Sports News reports that only a few legal details remain, and Dyche could be officially confirmed later on Monday.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis had considered several names, including Roberto Mancini and Marco Silva, before settling on Dyche, who once trained with Forest as a player.

However, Forest’s financial situation also played a key role in the decision. With Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limiting the club’s spending, paying compensation for another manager was unlikely. Both Nuno Espirito Santo and Postecoglou were dismissed within months, each exit costing the club a hefty payout.

Dyche and Mancini, who are both free agents, would come at no additional cost, while Silva’s release from Fulham would have required a significant compensation fee, a challenge given the club’s financial constraints.

However, after a turbulent few months and two sackings in less than eight games, Marinakis is desperate to restore stability and belief within the squad and fanbase.

Forest’s leadership sees Dyche as the right man to steady the ship, instill discipline, and motivate the team to stay competitive in the Premier League.

A key priority for the club’s owner is ensuring that whoever takes charge makes full use of the £180 million investment spent on new players during the summer. Notably, £130 million worth of talent was left out of the squad that lost 3-0 to Chelsea, a major point of disagreement between Postecoglou and the board.

With Dyche’s reputation for organization, grit, and man-management, Forest’s hierarchy believes he can guide the team through this rocky patch and help them rebuild confidence both on and off the pitch.
