The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, officially assumed office on Thursday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Prof. Amupitan arrived at the INEC headquarters around 2:40 p.m., accompanied by the Acting Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, several national commissioners, and the Secretary to the Commission. His assumption of duty came shortly after he was sworn in at the Presidential Villa.
Following the handover formalities, the new INEC boss is expected to hold his first meeting with directors and senior management staff of the commission to outline his immediate priorities.
A respected legal scholar from Kogi State, Professor Amupitan is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, where he began his academic career in 1989. His appointment marks a new chapter for the electoral body as it prepares for future elections and reforms.
