Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been released from detention after spending four days at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.

Sowore was arrested alongside Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Emmanuel Kanu (Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother), and 11 others during a peaceful protest in Abuja last week demanding Kanu’s release under the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign.

The group was reportedly dispersed and arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force before being charged before a Magistrate Court in Kuje on Friday, October 24, 2025. They faced charges of unlawful assembly and public disturbance.

Presiding Magistrate Abubakar Sai’id granted bail to all 14 defendants in the sum of ₦500,000 each, with conditions including the presentation of a verified National Identification Number (NIN), a three-year tax clearance certificate, and the deposit of their international passports with the court.

Following the fulfillment of these conditions, Sowore and the others were released on Monday, October 27, 2025.

Confirming his release via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Sowore wrote:

“HAPPENING NOW: Leaving Kuje Prison in Abuja after being detained there illegally for four days by @officialABAT illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.”

Sowore, known for his strong advocacy for democracy and civil rights, has remained a vocal critic of what he often describes as the government’s growing intolerance for dissent in Nigeria.
