The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) Osun state chapter have empowered 18 widows of late police officers, reaffirming their commitment to supporting families of personnel who died in active service. The empowerment programme, held on November 14th in Osogbo, was described as a “day of recognition, renewal, and hope” for the beneficiaries.
Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of POWA and wife of the Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Kangyang Ibrahim Gotan said, “Today is not just another event; it is a day of recognition, of renewal, of hope. Behind every brave officer stands a strong and resilient woman who shares in his dreams and sacrifices.”
Mrs. Gotan explained that POWA recognises the emotional, social, and economic challenges widows face, adding that the initiative was created to equip them with the tools and opportunities needed to rebuild their lives.
“Empowerment is not just about financial independence; it is about restoring dignity, confidence, and the belief that the future still holds promise” Mrs Gotan stated.
She further disclosed that the programme was inspired by the humanitarian efforts of the POWA President, Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun, whom she described as a leader “never tired of empowering widows and the less privileged.” Mrs. Gotan said the project would run in three phases, noting that 18 widows were empowered in the first edition with sewing machines, POS devices, coolers, grinding machines, and industrial equipment to support small businesses.
She emphasised that widows are often neglected by society, saying, society sees them as outcasts, but I chose to empower them and put a smile back on their faces. Many of them have nothing doing to support their children after losing their husbands, and we are here to change that.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, also commended the initiative, describing it as a “remarkable example of compassion and dedication. “On behalf of the Osun State Police Command, I extend heartfelt gratitude to the Police Officers’ Wives Association for this initiative to empower widows of our fallen heroes. Your dedication reflects our core values of care, compassion, and community safety.”
He added that the programme stands as “a shining example” of efforts to uplift those who lost their loved ones in the line of duty, expressing confidence that the gesture would bring “renewed hope, strength, and purpose” to families left behind. CP Gotan also praised POWA for its “selflessness and kindness,” noting that their contribution to the welfare of police families remains inspirational.
The CP thanked his wife and all supporters, including royal fathers, Divisional Police Officers, donors, and volunteers, for sustaining the vision. He emphasized that the empowerment programme will continue to expand until every widow under the Osun Command receives needed support.
