President Bola Tinubu has put his planned trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, on hold following fresh security crises in the country particularly the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.
Tinubu was expected to depart Abuja today for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa and later proceed to Angola for the 7th AU–EU Summit. However, the President opted to delay his travel after receiving disturbing reports about the two incidents.
In response to an appeal from the Kwara State Governor, Tinubu ordered the deployment of more security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area. He also instructed the police to immediately track down the bandits responsible for the church attack.
According to a statement by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President is awaiting briefings from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi State on his behalf, as well as reports from the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) on the Kwara attack.
Tinubu reaffirmed his directive to security agencies to take all necessary steps to rescue the 24 schoolgirls abducted by bandits in Kebbi.
Reflecting on recent attacks, the President had earlier expressed deep sadness over the death of soldiers and the abduction of students, saying:
“As Commander-in-Chief, I am pained by the tragic loss of our soldiers, including Brigadier General Musa Uba. May their families find comfort.
I am equally troubled that terrorists have again disrupted the education of innocent schoolgirls. I have ordered security forces to act swiftly and bring them back home.”
