Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has spent a third night in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, after failing to meet the bail conditions set by investigators.
Malami is currently being questioned over allegations linking him to terrorism financing and claims that he operated 46 bank accounts, accusations he insists are politically motivated attempts to tarnish his image.
As part of his bail terms, Malami’s international passport has been seized to restrict foreign travel. He is also required to report to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja every day for 30 days and provide two serving permanent secretaries as sureties, among other conditions.
In a statement issued by his media assistant, Mohammed Doka, the former AGF dismissed the allegations, describing them as “false, mischievous, and unsupported by any official records.”
Doka stressed that Malami had never been investigated for terrorism financing by the EFCC or by any security or intelligence agency within or outside Nigeria.
“We state categorically that there is no allegation, investigation or charge of terrorism financing against Malami, SAN, by the EFCC or any other agency, whether in Nigeria or abroad,” he said.
He further described claims that Malami operated 46 bank accounts as “fiction pushed by sensational media reports, not evidence.”
According to him, even a retired military officer referenced in recent publications clarified that he never accused Malami of sponsoring terrorism.
Doka argued that Malami’s track record contradicts the accusations, noting that as AGF, he championed reforms that strengthened Nigeria’s anti–money laundering and counter-terrorism financing systems, including the creation of an independent Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
He urged Nigerians to disregard what he called a coordinated “media trial” aimed at smearing Malami’s name.
“We thank all well-meaning Nigerians for their concern and support. We remain confident that truth and the rule of law will prevail,” he added.
According to him, Malami will come out of the ordeal “stronger,” and the team remains resolute in confronting what they describe as “political witch-hunt, misinformation and intimidation.”
