The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take urgent and decisive action against corruption, urging him to deploy the broom symbol of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to sweep graft out of the country.
Abure warned that no government could succeed without tackling corruption head-on, noting that effective leadership must be rooted in integrity, empathy and selflessness.
He made the call in a Christmas message issued on Friday in Abuja through the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.
“I called on President Tinubu to use the broom, which is his party’s logo, to sweep away corruption in the country, because no government can survive until corruption is fought to a standstill,” the statement read.
The LP chairman accused members of the ruling class of lacking compassion for ordinary Nigerians, stressing that the nation would continue to struggle unless leaders prioritise public welfare over personal enrichment.
According to him, resources concentrated in the hands of a few could have been channelled into providing critical infrastructure and improving schools, hospitals and other essential social services across the country.
Abure also said Nigeria would remain mired in challenges until contemporary leaders emulate the sacrificial and selfless leadership style of the country’s founding fathers, including Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Mallam Aminu Kano.
“Nigeria can only get better when leaders show empathy for the masses through selflessness. This will put an end to the primitive accumulation of wealth by a few individuals—resources that could have been used to build infrastructure, schools and hospitals,” he said.
Drawing from Christian teachings, Abure noted that Jesus Christ lived a life of humility and sacrifice, virtues he said were largely absent in today’s leadership, particularly among the ruling elite.
He added that meaningful national progress would only be possible when leaders demonstrate genuine concern for the people, an approach he said would curb excessive wealth accumulation at the expense of the common good.
The LP chairman further urged Nigerians to pray for improved security nationwide, while commending the military and other security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace during the festive season.
“I commend the gallant efforts of our servicemen, the State Security Service and other paramilitary agencies for ensuring peace during this period,” he said, while calling on the President to ensure that the military is adequately motivated to sustain its operations.
