World heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from hospital following a devastating road accident that claimed the lives of two of his close associates.
The Lagos and Ogun State governments confirmed Joshua’s discharge in a joint statement issued on Wednesday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Ogun State Governor, Kayode Akinmade.
According to the statement, the boxing star was discharged late Wednesday after doctors certified him clinically fit.
The two state governments once again expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who lost their lives in the accident involving Joshua on December 29, 2025. They offered prayers for the repose of the victims’ souls and strength for their families to bear the painful loss.
Although Joshua was said to be in stable condition at the time of his discharge, the statement noted that he remains deeply affected by the tragedy. Described as “heavy-hearted and full of emotions,” the boxer is expected to continue his recovery at home.
It was also revealed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday afternoon to pay their final respects to the deceased, as arrangements were being made for their repatriation later that day.
The statement further disclosed that Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, appreciated the overwhelming public support and expressions of concern following the tragic incident. The governors also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support throughout the period.
In addition, the two state governments commended the doctors and medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality care in treating Joshua and other victims of the accident.
The incident has continued to draw nationwide sympathy, with many Nigerians offering condolences to the bereaved families and wishing Anthony Joshua a full and speedy recovery.
