Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has formally returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift in the state’s power landscape.

Yusuf announced his defection on Monday during a ceremony held at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House. His return to the ruling party was witnessed by top APC leaders, including former National Chairman of the party and ex-Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje; the Deputy President of the Senate; the Senator representing Kano South, Barau Jibrin; Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, alongside other party stalwarts.

Speaking at the event, the governor said his decision to rejoin the APC was driven by the need to work more closely with the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu. According to him, aligning Kano State with the ruling party at the centre would enhance cooperation, accelerate development, and bring greater benefits to the people of the state.

Yusuf noted that effective governance required strong collaboration between the state and federal authorities, stressing that his move was in the best interest of Kano residents rather than personal political gain.

The governor was elected in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). However, his return to the APC follows months of political realignments in Kano, including the defection of several lawmakers from the Kano State House of Assembly and members of the House of Representatives.

Political observers believe Yusuf’s defection could significantly reshape Kano’s political dynamics ahead of future elections, strengthening the APC’s foothold in the state.
