Tinubu-signs

President Bola Tinubu has formally written to the Senate, requesting confirmation of two key appointments, a National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a new Chairman for the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the President sought approval for the nomination of retired Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq as National Commissioner representing Adamawa State at the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The letter, which was read during Tuesday’s plenary, stated that the nomination was made in line with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Tinubu expressed confidence that the Senate would give the request prompt consideration and approval.

Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on INEC for further legislative review. The committee has been directed to report back to the plenary within one week.

In a separate correspondence, the President also asked the Senate to confirm the nomination of Ambassador Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.

Tinubu explained that the request was made pursuant to Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2026, and again urged lawmakers to act swiftly on the matter. He conveyed his “highest regards” to the Senate President and members of the upper chamber while expressing hope for speedy confirmation.

The second request was referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, which is also expected to present its report within one week.

The nominations, once confirmed, will fill critical positions in Nigeria’s electoral management body and the commission responsible for overseeing Hajj operations for Nigerian pilgrims.
