Barely a week after an exclusive report by Insight Links TV, the Osun State Government has announced the suspension of the elevation of two controversial traditional rulers following disputes surrounding the process that led to the decision.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dosu Babatunde, who said the government acted after receiving formal protests from some traditional rulers in the state.

Insight Links TV has earlier reported that the two traditional rulers, Olokeolooru Obalufon of Okeolooru Obalufon, Oba Adebisi Mukaila Micheal and Onirante of Irante, Oba Mathew Olasunkanmi Ogundele were crowned on pieces of land belonging to another community.

According to the statement by Babatunde, objections were raised by the Owa of Otan Ayegbaju and the Oluresi of Iresi, among others, who questioned the procedure followed in the request for the elevation of the affected monarchs.

The government stated that the petitions alleged that the proposal for the elevation did not pass through the appropriate Traditional Council and Chieftaincy Committee as required.

It also indicated that the Akifin of Ikinfin, who recommended the elevation, was not the recognised prescribed authority responsible for the chieftaincies involved.

Following a review of the complaints, the state government said its findings confirmed irregularities in the process, leading to the suspension of the elevation to address the issues raised.

The statement further noted that the government had become aware of claims circulating about the matter and alleged that some individuals were attempting to politicise the development for partisan purposes.
