Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has stepped down from his position in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his resignation on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. Sources indicate that Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to the President shortly after noon, with plans to contest under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

His exit follows a directive issued earlier in March, requiring all political appointees with aspirations to contest in the 2027 elections to resign from their positions by March 31, 2026.

The directive, communicated through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, affects ministers, advisers, and other top government officials. It is in line with provisions of the Electoral Act aimed at preventing conflicts of interest as preparations for the next general elections gather momentum.

Tuggar’s resignation marks a significant political move as he joins the growing list of government officials stepping down to pursue elective offices ahead of 2027.
