Nigeria’s entertainment and academic communities are mourning the death of veteran actor and respected scholar, Professor Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo, popularly known as Professor Kola Oyewo.
The announcement of his passing was made by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, in an emotional message shared on his Facebook page.
Expressing grief over the loss, Adetoyese described his father as a man whose life was defined by love, wisdom, strength and kindness.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father,” he wrote.
He added that although the family is mourning the painful loss, they remain thankful to God for the life Professor Oyewo lived and the lasting impact he made.
According to him, his father’s influence will continue to live on through the memories shared with family, friends and everyone whose lives he touched.
Adetoyese also appealed for prayers, comfort and support for the family during the period of mourning as they celebrate the remarkable legacy left behind by the late actor and academic.
Professor Kola Oyewo was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected figures in theatre and performing arts. Over several decades, he built a distinguished career as an actor, lecturer and cultural ambassador, contributing significantly to the growth and preservation of Yoruba and Nigerian theatre.
His death marks the end of a remarkable era in Nigeria’s creative and academic landscape.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
