Colombia made a winning return to the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, defeating tournament debutants Uzbekistan 3-1 in an entertaining Group K encounter at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
Playing in their first World Cup match since 2018, Los Cafeteros were made to work hard by a disciplined Uzbekistan side that showed determination and defensive organisation throughout much of the contest.
Colombia controlled possession and dictated the tempo for long spells but struggled to break through the compact Uzbek defence during a tense opening half.
The breakthrough finally arrived five minutes before halftime when Daniel Muñoz produced a moment of brilliance. Meeting a well-delivered pass from Luis Díaz, Muñoz struck a superb aerial effort into the net to hand Colombia a deserved lead and ignite celebrations among their supporters inside the stadium.
Uzbekistan, however, refused to be overawed on football’s biggest stage.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Abbosbek Fayzullaev capitalised on a quick transition to score a historic equaliser for the Central Asian side, bringing the score to 1-1 and briefly shifting momentum.
Just five minutes later Colombia responded immediately with Luis Díaz who had been influential throughout the match as he restored his side’s advantage with a composed finish after another dangerous attacking move.
As Uzbekistan committed more players forward in search of another equaliser late in the game, Colombia took advantage of the spaces left behind.
Deep into stoppage time, Jaminton Campaz completed a swift counterattack and calmly found the net in the 90+9th minute to seal a 3-1 victory and ensure a successful start to Colombia’s World Cup campaign.
The result gives coach Néstor Lorenzo’s side an important three points and early momentum in Group K as they aim to progress into the knockout rounds.
For Uzbekistan, despite suffering defeat in their first-ever World Cup appearance, there were plenty of encouraging signs and moments that suggested they could still challenge in the matches ahead.
