The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into a self-acclaimed prophet, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, also known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, over allegations of defrauding members of his ministry to the tune of N70.39 million.

The commission disclosed this in a statement shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, noting that operatives of its Enugu Zonal Directorate are handling the investigation.

According to the EFCC, the suspect is alleged to have obtained funds from church members through various schemes, including promises of spiritual intervention and investment opportunities.

One of the petitioners, Okey Uwakwe, alleged that the cleric collected N6.23 million from him for spiritual purposes aimed at convincing his brother, who had lived abroad since 1997, to return to Nigeria.

Uwakwe further claimed that he paid an additional N3.25 million for spiritual assistance to help his childless sister-in-law conceive after more than 15 years of barrenness.

He also alleged that the prophet informed members of his ministry that he had won N33 billion in a lottery and urged them to contribute money with the promise of sharing in the purported winnings.

According to him, he contributed an extra N3.35 million to the scheme, as well as N500,000 toward a rice-processing venture allegedly valued at N1 billion.

The petitioner stated that he had paid a total of N13.33 million to the suspect without receiving any benefit.

The EFCC added that during its investigation, several other members of the ministry came forward with similar allegations.

Some members reportedly claimed the suspect sold items such as “holy ghost thunder,” “miracle stickers,” and “spiritual dragons,” which were said to guarantee prosperity and solutions to personal problems.

“One of the victims said he was asked to purchase what was described as ‘holy ghost thunder’ to solve his challenges, but after payment, nothing changed,” the commission stated.

The EFCC said preliminary findings indicate that a total of N70.39 million may have been collected from members of the ministry.

It added that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
