The Ilobu Asake Development Union (IDU) has called on residents, political stakeholders, and members of the community to remain peaceful and uphold civic responsibility following recent political developments in Ilobu.
In a press release issued by the Office of the President, the union appealed for calm after recent judicial outcomes and reports of physical confrontations within the local government area.
According to the statement, the community’s immediate priority should remain the preservation of peace, unity, and public safety.
The union noted that after emerging from a difficult period of communal challenges, Ilobu must now focus on rebuilding, healing, and sustaining harmony among residents.
IDU commended political leaders across party lines for demonstrating restraint and maturity, particularly individuals who publicly encouraged peace and discouraged hostility. It stressed that maintaining order and civility during periods of political tension reflects responsible leadership and citizenship.
While acknowledging that political contest and public expression are normal features of democracy, the union warned against actions capable of escalating into unrest or threatening lives and property.
The group further urged political parties, supporters, and youths to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could disrupt public order.
Describing Ilobu as one indivisible community, IDU emphasized that political affiliations should not overshadow the shared identity and collective interest of the people.
The statement also recognised citizens’ constitutional rights to express grievances and pursue legal remedies but maintained that demonstrations, celebrations, and other public activities must be conducted peacefully and within the boundaries of the law.
IDU expressed appreciation to the traditional institution, including the Olobu of Ilobu and the Olobu-in-Council, for their leadership and stabilising role during the period. The union also commended security agencies, especially the police, for their professionalism in maintaining order.
Community elders and opinion leaders were equally acknowledged for working behind the scenes to preserve peace.
The union concluded by urging residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to protecting the peace achieved in the community, stressing that the overall interest of Ilobu should guide public conduct in the days ahead.
