The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three suspects, including a former security guard, in connection with the murder of former Ogun State Television broadcaster, Olakitan Oyesiku, and her security guard, Pelumi Adetayo.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, saying the arrests followed extensive intelligence gathering, forensic investigations, and technical tracking by detectives.
Oyesiku and Adetayo were found dead at the retired broadcaster’s residence in Owode-Egba on June 21. Her Lexus RX 330 SUV was also reported missing from the premises.
According to Ojajuni, the police received a distress report at about 4 p.m. on June 21 regarding suspicious activities at the residence. Officers who responded to the scene discovered signs of forced entry, while the security house within the compound was found locked.
Investigators subsequently found Adetayo’s body inside the security house, while Oyesiku was discovered in a pool of blood in the living room of the main building.
“The crime scene was scientifically processed, and preliminary findings indicated that the deceased’s Lexus RX 330 vehicle had been taken from the compound, suggesting a case of robbery and murder,” the police commissioner said.
The stolen vehicle was recovered the following day through intelligence-led operations and technical tracking.
Ojajuni revealed that a handwritten note allegedly left behind at the crime scene became a major breakthrough in the investigation. Forensic analysis of the note generated key leads that helped detectives identify and trace the suspects.
He explained that although the vehicle’s ignition key had been removed and its number plates detached, officers recovered one of the registration plates hidden beneath a seat, confirming the vehicle’s ownership.
The principal suspect, identified as 22-year-old Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip, was arrested on June 24 at a construction site in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, where he was working as a labourer.
Further operations led to the arrest of two other suspects, Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, 27, a security guard, and Sobu Obafunsho, 36, a bricklayer.
According to the police commissioner, Philip confessed to the crime and admitted recruiting the two other suspects.
“During interrogation, Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip confessed to participating in the murder of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku and disclosed that he recruited Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola and Sobu Obafunsho to assist in carrying out the attack,” Ojajuni said.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that he planned the attack due to grievances stemming from his previous employment as a security guard for the deceased and intended to “teach her a lesson.”
Police investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly struck on June 20, first overpowering Adetayo and using him to gain access to Oyesiku’s residence.
“After gaining entry, they attacked Madam Olakitan Oyesiku and later killed the security guard before fleeing with the victim’s Lexus RX 330 vehicle,” the commissioner stated.
Detectives later recovered several items believed to be connected to the crime, including a broken hammer, a cutlass, a plank, and a black pen.
Ojajuni stressed that investigations remain ongoing despite the suspects’ confessional statements and the recovery of substantial evidence.
He assured residents that the command would ensure a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution of all individuals linked to the killings, while also upholding the suspects’ right to due process under the law.
