While Germany and Ivory Coast booked direct qualification from the group, Ecuador completed a remarkable escape route by progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after producing a stunning 2–1 victory over the Germans.
The final round began with Germany appearing firmly in control after Leroy Sané struck inside two minutes to hand the European giants an early lead against Ecuador.
