The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has revealed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has signed a written agreement committing to serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, while responding to questions about Obi’s repeated promise to leave office after a single tenure.
The former Kano State governor said the agreement was reached to strengthen trust among members of the political alliance and reassure supporters that the power-sharing arrangement would be honoured.
According to him, Obi has consistently demonstrated sincerity over his one-term pledge, adding that he has no reason to believe the former Anambra State governor would abandon the promise if elected.
“I personally believe him, and I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will renege. I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes,” Kwankwaso said.
He explained that the understanding between both leaders goes beyond verbal assurances, revealing that it had been formally documented.
“We are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to even put it on paper. We have done one agreement for the party, and we have done another one for us,” he stated.
Speaking further, Kwankwaso said the agreement provides that political power would return to northern Nigeria after Obi completes his single four-year tenure from 2027 to 2031.
“The agreement is that after four years we will come together as a party, friends and brothers, involve everybody and work together so that after his term, or our term of four years from 2027 to 2031, power returns to the North. That is the general agreement,” he said.
