Manchester City have agreed a British-record £125 million deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Romano broke the news on Tuesday, announcing that Chelsea had approved the sale of the Argentina international, with Fernandez now set to sign his contract with Manchester City.
In a post on his social media platforms, Romano wrote: “Here we go! Man City agree deal to sign Enzo Fernández from Chelsea.”
He added that the deal, worth £125 million, had been agreed and that “everything [is] done”, with Fernandez expected to complete the formalities of his move to the Etihad Stadium.
The transfer fee matches the British record set by Liverpool for Alexander Isak and would see Chelsea make about £18 million on the midfielder they signed from Benfica for approximately £107 million in January 2023.
Fernandez leaves Chelsea after three-and-a-half seasons in which he established himself as one of the club’s most influential midfielders.
The Argentina international made 169 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 31 goals, while also providing a significant number of assists from midfield.
His most productive campaign came in the 2025/26 season, when he scored 15 goals and registered seven assists in 54 appearances across all competitions.
Fernandez’s goals were not limited to routine contributions, with the midfielder producing important strikes at crucial moments. He scored a stoppage-time equaliser against Manchester City before netting a 92nd-minute winner against West Ham United on his 150th appearance for Chelsea.
His time at Stamford Bridge also produced silverware as he helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League in 2025, scoring in the club’s 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the final.
He later played a key role in Chelsea’s triumph at the FIFA Club World Cup, starting the final as the London club defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0.
The Club World Cup victory added another remarkable achievement to Fernandez’s career. Having already won the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 2022, he became the first player to hold both the World Cup and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup titles.
Beyond his goals and trophies, Fernandez grew into an important creative and leadership figure at Chelsea. He regularly captained the side when Reece James was unavailable and became a key component of the team’s midfield.
His departure will therefore leave Chelsea with a significant void to fill, despite the substantial financial return from the deal.
The Blues are already understood to be exploring midfield replacements, with Roma’s Manu Koné and Monaco’s Lamine Camara among the players reportedly being considered.
For Manchester City, Fernandez’s arrival will reunite him with Enzo Maresca, his former Chelsea manager, and add another technically gifted midfielder to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
The transfer also represents a major piece of business for Chelsea, who have been among the Premier League’s biggest sellers during the current window.
Fernandez’s Chelsea spell ultimately ends with 169 appearances, 31 goals, seven assists in his final season alone, and two major club trophies, alongside the distinction of being a World Cup winner with Argentina.
For Chelsea supporters, the £125 million sale marks the departure of a midfielder who arrived at Stamford Bridge as one of the most expensive players in football and leaves having developed into one of the club’s most important performers of the era.
