Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to prioritise peace, unity and justice as the country prepares for the 2027 general election, saying the forthcoming electoral season will test the nation’s democratic maturity.

Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message on Thursday, as Nigeria marked 66 years of independence.

Reflecting on the country’s journey since independence in 1960, the former President acknowledged the challenges Nigeria has faced over the years but said the resilience of its people had continued to keep the nation moving forward.

“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” Jonathan said.

He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to national unity, stressing that the country’s diversity and human and natural resources could provide a strong foundation for sustainable development if properly harnessed.

“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands.

“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant.

“As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity,” he added.

Jonathan also called on young Nigerians to remain courageous and hopeful about the country’s future, urging them to contribute to building a nation that offers better opportunities for present and future generations.

“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development.

“To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come,” he said.

The former President, however, said achieving such a future would require responsible leadership, accountability and a stronger commitment to good governance.

He urged leaders at all levels to demonstrate patriotism and address the country’s social and economic challenges through sacrifice, accountability and respect for the rule of law.

“Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism.

“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan said.

His message comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election gather momentum. In a separate address last month, Jonathan also cautioned politicians against treating the pursuit of electoral victory as justification for violating established rules, stressing that political contests should be conducted within the law.

He urged Nigerians to remain committed to national service and work collectively towards building a peaceful, secure and equitable country.

“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he added.
