The Senate has on Wednesday confirmed the nominations of Muhammad Nami as Chairman of the board of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS); and Mr. Edward Adamu as the new Chairman of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

The confirmation of Nami, who is from the North Central geopolitical zone and other members of the FIRS’ board, came seven years after it was dissolved.

The resolution of the Senate followed the consideration and approval of the report of the Senator Solomon Adeola-led Senate Committee at plenary.

The FIRS board was dissolved in 2012 and the various helmsmen of the agency managed it without a substantive board.

Other members of the FIRS board confirmed by the Senate include: James Yakwen Ayuba (North Central); Ado Danjuma (North West); Adam Baba Mohammed (North East); Ikeme Osakwe (South East); Adewale Ogunyomade (South West) and Ehile Adetola Aibangbee (South South.

Others, who are representatives of relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAS) of the Federal Government in the board are: Ladidi Bara’atu Mohammed (Attorney General of the Federation Office), Godwin Emefiele (Central Bank of Nigeria), Fatima Hayatu (Ministry of Finance), Maagbe Adaa (Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission), Umar Ajiya (Nigerian National Petroleum Commission), DCG T. M. Isah (Nigeria Customs Service) and the Registrar General of the Corporate Affairs Commission.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter forwarded to the Senate on December 9, requested the upper legislative chamber to confirm the appointment of Nami as the Executive Chairman of the FIRS and 13 members of the board.

The Senate also confirmed the appointment of Mr. Edward Adamu as the new Chairman of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria.

The confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other financial institutions presented by its Chairman, Senator Uba Sani. (The Nation)
