Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, Adelere Oriolowo was on Sunday attacked while trying to second a motion endorsing Governor Gboyega Oyetola for second term.
Sources at the All Progressives Congress zonal meeting held in Ikire, Irewole local government area of Osun State have stated that Oriolowo was attacked by angry party members, who had earlier welcomed him into the venue of the meeting with boos.
It was gathered that the party members was angered over the poor performance of the Lawmaker.
InsightMedia reported that the lawmaker on Sunday revealed that he escaped an assassination attempt during the party congress.
Oriolowo, in a Facebook post said “just escaped an assassination attempt on my life and that of my entourage. To God be the glory, we are safe and alive. ”
InsightMedia gathered that the meeting, which had in attendance the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Benedict Alabi, was also attended by several party leaders and members drawn from the ten local governments areas in Osun West Senatorial District.
Sources present at the meeting said Oriolowo, who came into the venue towards the end of the meeting was asked to second a motion moved by a state EXCO of the party endorsing Governor Oyetola for second term but jeers and boos from party members after he took microphone made it difficult for him to speak.
The source said, “after several minutes, the party members refused to allow him speak, asking what his achievements have been since he became senator. He dropped the microphone and left the meeting.
“It was at that point that angry members followed him and pelted him with stones.”
In his own narration, the APC Youth leader in Irewole, Olagoke Akinwemimo also said the attack was not an assassination attempt. It’s as a result of the performance of the senator.
Akinwemimo, who corroborated the narration by other sources, said “people were angry at him because of his performance. He also came late to the meeting.
“The Deputy Governor was still on seat when he left the venue and the attack on him happened outside the venue. He was only booed by party leaders and members while at the meeting.” He said.
In his reaction, Spokesperson for the senator, Niyi Usamotu dismissed the report of poor performance of his principal.
He said Oriolowo has been one of the best lawmakers in the state, having facilitated several projects and empowerments into the district.
“How can a senator who has facilitated several projects to his Constituency being alleged of poor performance? A Lawmaker who has organized empowerments for hundreds of people? A person who has used his office to secure appointments for many youths in the Constituency. That is a lie.” Usamotu said.
When asked if his principal is in good terms with the leadership of the APC in the Constituency, the media aide said, “he’s good relationship with leaders of the party at all levels”.
