UEFA has announced new champions league draw following the technical error that marred the previous draw done in the early hours of Monday.
In the new draw, Manchester United who were initially paired with Paris Saint-Germain, will play Athletico Madrid.
The draw was initially cancelled after the Reds were erroneously drawn
with Villarreal. The Spanish side were also in Group F and finished runners-up behind Ralf Rangnick’s men, meaning we could not play each other at this stage.
Although the draw was concluded, UEFA later announced that the technical mistakes had an impact on the outcome so the ceremony would need to take place again at 14:00 GMT.
So, at the second time of asking, Manchester United were drawn with Spanish champions Atletico.
PSG will now have to play Real Madrid, while Liverpool will slug it out with Inter Milan.
Athletico and United have only met twice in competitive European football before, in the 1991/92 European Cup Winners’ Cup, when the home side won 3-0 at the Vicente Calderon. The second leg was a 1-1 draw, with Mark Hughes scoring for the Reds.
As a seeded team, United will be at home in the second leg on 8/9/15/16 March with kick-off at 20:00 GMT. The first legs are due to be played on 15/16/22/23 February, with the same start time.
With the road to May’s final at Zenit St Petersburg’s Gazprom Arena continuing, it is worth remembering the away-goals rule has been scrapped. Extra-time and penalties will be used if teams are level after the two games.
