The Nigerian Senate has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strictly adhere to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended and the Electoral Act 2022 in the conduct of the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on March 11, 2023
The call was made by the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, during a session in Abuja. Lawan also urged INEC to consider all issues raised by the public during the just concluded presidential and National Assembly elections to ensure smooth conduct of the upcoming elections.
According to Lawan, the success of the elections is crucial to Nigeria’s democracy, and all Nigerians should support INEC in whatever way possible to ensure that the polls are conducted successfully.
The Senate also announced an adjournment until March 14 to enable Senators to participate in the campaigns and elections. Lawan noted that seven serving Senators were contesting in the governorship election and listed them to include Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, and Sen. Aishatu Binani.
Lawan wished all the contestants success and urged those not running to participate in the electoral process to observe first-hand some of the issues that may arise. Despite the successful conduct of the presidential and National Assembly elections, Lawan acknowledged that the public had raised some complaints.
