A mysterious bright flash illuminated the skies over the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Wednesday evening. Speculations regarding the cause of the phenomenon ranged from a meteorite to a falling NASA satellite, with social media users even suggesting that it could be due to extraterrestrial activity. However, officials from the Ukrainian air force claimed it was not due to a Russian air attack, despite its continued involvement in the country since the invasion in 2022.
Kyiv’s military administration head, Serhiy Popko, suggested that the cause of the light was the re-entry of a decommissioned NASA satellite called the RHESSI spacecraft. But the US space agency’s Office of Communications told the BBC that the satellite was still in orbit at the time of the flash. The US defense department continued to track the satellite’s movements.
While the cause of the flash remains unexplained, the Ukrainian air force has ruled out any Russian involvement. Ukrainian social media has been inundated with theories, memes, and alien sightings after the event. The flash is the latest in a series of mysterious events that have occurred worldwide in recent years, with some attributing them to extraterrestrial activity.
