Prince Harry has joined other members of the royal family at Westminster Abbey for the coronation of his father, King Charles III. He appeared relaxed and was seen chatting with his cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. This is believed to be the first time he has seen his family since the publication of his controversial memoir, “Spare”. After the ceremony, he will reportedly return to the US to celebrate his son Archie’s fourth birthday.
Prince Harry and his uncle Prince Andrew have no formal role in the ceremony as they are not working members of the Royal Family. Unlike other members of the family, Prince Harry is not wearing robes or military uniform despite serving in the army for a decade. Relations between Prince Harry and other members of the family have been strained since the publication of his memoir, in which he vividly revealed fall-outs and disagreements with relatives.
The decision for Meghan to reject the invitation was widely seen as part of these continuing, unresolved family tensions. Last month, the King tried to stop Prince Harry from taking legal action against newspapers over alleged phone-hacking. In a witness statement, Prince Harry said he was “summoned to Buckingham Palace” and told to drop the cases because of the effect on the family.
The coronation of King Charles III has drawn widespread attention, and the royal family’s attendance, including Prince Harry, has only increased public interest. Despite being one of the most-watched events in the UK, the ceremony has also highlighted the family’s complex and sometimes troubled dynamics.
