In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the Russian propaganda machine has taken a disturbing turn by using teenagers as instruments of disinformation. Alexander Malkevich, a close associate of the head of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has been at the forefront of this battle for hearts and minds in occupied areas behind the front lines. Malkevich has been involved in setting up pro-Russian TV stations and spreading Russian influence in key captured regions since the invasion began in February 2022.
Facing a shortage of willing personnel, Malkevich resorted to recruiting underage reporters for his propaganda channels. Under the guise of a “media school” in Kherson, he trained these young reporters and employed them before they reached the legal age of adulthood. The channels strictly adhere to Kremlin’s propaganda narratives, disseminating misinformation and justifying Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Despite his efforts, Malkevich’s time in Ukraine was short-lived, as Ukrainian forces regained control of Kherson and he fled with some of his equipment and staff. However, the use of teenage reporters by Russian agents highlights the unscrupulous tactics employed to spread propaganda and manipulate public opinion in conflict zones.
The exploitation of vulnerable young individuals for the dissemination of misinformation underscores the lengths to which Russia is willing to go in its information warfare campaigns. It also serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and critical media literacy in the face of such tactics.
