As the heatwave persists, authorities are urging people to stay hydrated by drinking at least two liters of water per day and avoiding dehydrating beverages such as coffee and alcohol. Tourists in Rome are resorting to creative measures to beat the heat, including using sprinklers and thermal water. The extreme conditions, dubbed the Cerberus heatwave after the mythical three-headed dog, are set to intensify over the next few days.
This year’s heatwave follows a pattern of increasingly frequent and record-breaking temperatures, which experts attribute to climate change. Last year alone, over 60,000 deaths were attributed to heatwaves in Europe. Concerns are rising that this summer’s scorching temperatures could lead to even more fatalities.
