A young mother, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, tragically lost her life on Thursday after being struck by a stray bullet fired by a police officer in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State.

The incident occurred near Okela Police Station, where the officer, reportedly assigned to another unit, had come to visit.

Witnesses revealed that the officer allegedly fired the shot while celebrating the promotion of a colleague. The bullet hit Adekalu, a mother of one, in front of shops located opposite the police station.

Accounts of her activities at the time differ. One eyewitness claimed, “She was passing by after paying her rent when the bullet hit her in front of a shop.”

Another source suggested she had just disembarked from a commercial motorbike and was heading toward the police station when the tragedy occurred.

Adekalu was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries.

The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, AIG Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the incident, stating, “The officer involved has been disarmed and detained. He will face interrogation in line with the Nigerian Police Act.”

This incident has sparked public outrage, calling for accountability and stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
