A none government organization, Democracy Vanguard, DV, has written Governor of Osun State, Mr Gboyega Oyetola to immediately order the conduction of local government election.
The group’s state coordinator, Mr Olowu Emmanuel in the letter tittle ‘Conducting Local Government Election Is A Constitutional Provision’ warned Oyetola against setting up of a caretaker committee for local governments of the state.
Emmanuel argued that appointing a caretaker committee instead of allowing the people to vote their chairmen and councillors is alien to Nigeria’s constitution and also a danger to the cardinal purpose of the creation of local governments in Nigeria.
Part of the letter reads : “We write to remind you that on Friday, 5th of February 2021 which was over three months ago, the tenure of local government executive expired and since then the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has not made any statement in relations to when local government election of Osun would hold.

We will like to remind you of Section 7 (sub section 1) of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) which states that: 7. (1) The system of local government by democratically elected local government councils is under this Constitution guaranteed; and accordingly, the Government of every State shall, subject to section 8 of this Constitution, ensure their existence under a Law which provides for the establishment, structure, composition, finance and functions of such councils.
