Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed profound apologies to the families of civilians killed during the recent airstrikes in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The bombing, which occurred on Wednesday, December 25, targeted a logistics hub of the Lakurawa insurgent group but tragically resulted in the deaths of ten innocent people.
In a heartfelt statement released three days later by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families and acknowledged the tragedy as an unintended consequence of military operations aimed at combating terrorism.
He described the event as a rare and unfortunate incident that underscores the complexities of war, where civilians sometimes suffer despite efforts to protect them.
“I must say we are deeply sorry and dismayed by the civilian casualties and the immense pain caused during this difficult time,” the Vice President stated. He extended sympathies to the Government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the grieving families, noting that the Federal Government shares in their sorrow.
The airstrikes were part of Operation Fansan Yamma, a coordinated effort by air and land forces to neutralize the Lakurawa terrorist group in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities.
Call for Understanding and Support
Shettima appealed for continued public support and understanding for the armed forces, emphasizing the sacrifices they make to safeguard lives.
While expressing regret over the loss of innocent lives, he underscored the importance of providing the military with reliable information to improve the precision and effectiveness of operations against terrorists.
“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologize for this great loss. I urge you to assist our brave troops as they strive to ensure a safer Nigeria,” Shettima said.
He reassured the people of Sokoto State of the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism, promising that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will leave no stone unturned in its pursuit of peace.
“Our administration is resolute in its efforts to eliminate the remnants of terror elements in the country. We envision a Nigeria where farmers can freely work their lands and citizens live without fear of attacks,” Shettima affirmed.
Concluding his statement, the Vice President lauded the courage and dedication of the armed forces and called for unity in the fight against terrorism. “Security is a collective responsibility. Together, we can overcome this monstrous evil and build a peaceful Nigeria for all.”
