Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has declared that the state’s newly established model smart schools are designed to provide children from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds with world-class education at no cost.
Radda made the statement on Sunday while hosting a delegation of 17 European Union envoys at the Dumurkul Model Secondary School in Daura, one of three modern schools established across the state’s political zones.
“These schools provide opportunities for children from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds. Admission is merit-based, focusing on students from public schools and rural communities,” the governor said.
“The aim is to build the future of those who otherwise might not have opportunities, ensuring that in the next 20 to 30 years, these students can compete on the global stage,” he added.
Radda disclosed that the schools are equipped with 24-hour electricity, ICT-enabled classrooms, hostels, and internet access, with all educational services provided free of charge.
Speaking during the visit, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Suleiman Jibia, said the Dumurkul school is nearing completion and will be commissioned within two weeks, noting that students have already been enrolled and teachers recruited.
“These model schools are equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and learning materials and are designed to expand to other zones in the future,” Jibia said.
The Bengt van Loosdrecht, Ambassador of the Netherlands, commended the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward improving access to quality education and modern learning infrastructure in the state.
Following the school tour, the delegation visited the historic Kusugu Well, a cultural site believed to be over 2,000 years old.
“Kusugu Well is central to the history of Katsina. Immortalising this heritage alongside our educational investments helps preserve the legacy of our people,” Radda said.
Also speaking, the Egyptian Ambassador, Mohamed Fouad, praised the state government for preserving its cultural heritage and described the cultural night held for the delegation as a remarkable display of Katsina’s traditions.
The visit was attended by key government officials, including Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe and the Secretary to the State GoRadda: Katsina smart schools vernment, Abdullahi Garba Faskari, alongside members of the State Executive Council.
