Mudashiru Obasa has issued an apology to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police Force for the assault on their operatives that occurred at the Lagos State House of Assembly on February 17.
In a statement signed on Thursday, February 27, Obasa expressed deep regret over the incident. He stated that the altercation with security personnel was deeply unfortunate.
The statement read “On behalf of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I sincerely apologize to the security agencies for the embarrassment caused, particularly the assault on DSS operatives as widely circulated in video footage.
We hold your efforts in high regard and recognize the important role you play in ensuring the protection of lives and property within the Assembly and across Lagos State.
“The request for additional support and your presence on that particular day was made by the Assembly, as we have done on numerous occasions in the past. It is truly regrettable that security operatives were assaulted within the sacred chambers of our State Assembly, and I apologize without reservation on behalf of the entire Assembly.
“The Lagos Assembly and security agencies have always maintained a cordial and respectful relationship, calling upon you whenever necessary to help maintain law and order. It is our hope that this unfortunate incident will not mar the positive relationship we have fostered over the years.
“We also appeal on behalf of those charged in connection with the incident, hoping for an amicable resolution of this matter that will strengthen our partnership for the continued peace and stability of our state.”
Obasa’s apology comes after he returned to the Assembly today and officially resumed his duties as Speaker.
Meanwhile, three staff members of the Assembly have been granted bail after being charged with assaulting DSS operatives.
