An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Ogun State, has sentenced Falilatu Amidu and her daughter, Ayisatu Amidu, to six months in prison for stealing dry ponmo (cow skin), stockfish, and dried meat valued at N1 million.
However, they were given the option to pay a N5,000 fine, provided they each repay N100,000 to the complainant before being allowed to settle the fine.
The two women, who reside in the Ago-Oko area of Abeokuta, were convicted of conspiracy and theft. Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Odumosu determined that the prosecution had presented enough evidence to prove the defendants’ guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Kehinde Fawunmi, the theft took place in August 2024 at Lafenwa market. Falilatu Amidu, who had previously helped the complainant, Mrs. Kafayat Alao, with transporting goods, was entrusted with picking up some items. After waiting for over an hour without hearing from Falilatu, Mrs. Alao went to her store and discovered that a large sack containing stockfish, dry ponmo, and dried meat had been stolen.
Further investigation revealed that Falilatu had taken the goods and handed them over to her daughter, Ayisatu, who knowingly accepted and intended to sell the stolen items.
The crime violated sections 516, 390(9), and 127 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
